- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1⁄2 cup molasses
- 1⁄2 cup brown sugar
- 1⁄2 cup buttermilk
- 1 egg
- 1 1⁄2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon ginger
- 1⁄4 teaspoon salt
- 1⁄4 teaspoon mace
- 1⁄2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1⁄2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1⁄2 teaspoon allspice
directions
- Combine butter, molasses, brown sugar, and buttermilk in a medium saucepan over low heat. Heat until butter is melted and remove from heat. When cool, beat in egg.
- In a bowl, combine flour, baking soda, spices and salt; fold into moist ingredients.
- Turn into a greased and floured 9-inch cake pan and bake in the middle of a preheated 350 F oven for 30 minutes or until a tester comes out clean.
- Cool before serving.
