Pooris (Fried Indian Bread)

ingredients
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 tablespoon canola oil
- 1⁄2 teaspoon salt
- 1⁄2 cup hot water
directions
- Put the flour and salt into a medium-sized bowl. Pour the oil and hot water on top. Mix together with hands until it becomes a soft dough. Cover the dough with a damp towel to keep it moist. Let the dough sit for 30 minutes.
- Sprinkle some flour on the counter and knead the dough for a couple of minutes. Divide the dough into 6 equal parts. Roll each piece into a 6-inch circle. Be sure to cover each circle with a cloth to keep from drying out.
- Heat a couple of tablespoons of canola oil in a skillet. When the skillet is hot, fry one circle of dough at a time, adding a little oil with each. Fry 15-20 seconds on each side until the it is puffed and golden. Serve hot.

I was sure I had already written my review but apparently not. This is a great bread to serve with Indian food or just as a snack. I made mine with white flour, like they do in Indian restaurants, and it was so easy and tasty. At my favorite Indian restaurant in Auckland, they serve this bread with either garlic or as "Pashwari Naan" - which contains chopped pistachios and dried fruit, like cherries. It's oh, so good, served hot right out of the brick ovens! Made for ZWT 6.

This bread had a nice soft texture and good plain bread taste, which would be perfect with any Indian meal. I had expected the dough to be more of a soft but kneadable one, which mine wasnt. It was super liquid and I couldnt roll it out at all. I simply dropped it into the frying pan and that seemed to work alright as I did end up with pancake like shapes of bread. :)<br/>All in all I would make this again as it is easy and quick, but I think Id reduce the liquid and maybe add some herbs to the dough.<br/>THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing this recipe here with us, enjolinfam.<br/>Made and reviewed for Aussie/NZ Recipe Swap February 2011.

I would give you 10 stars if I could. This is fantastic and easy. For frying I used oil for 3 and no stick cooking spray for 3; I preferred the cooking spray which is just personal preference. Now I know I was supposed to dip this in some lentils or beans or even wrap up some meat in it BUT, I did the American thing and slathered it in butter. WONDERFUL! Kid friendly too!

Update: We've moved back to the states, and are experiencing the joys of living in Wenatchee, WA for the first time! I'm spending most of my time in the kitchen canning, freezing, and drying fruit now and loving it!
We are a couple, Jason and Mollie, that loves to cook together. We have two wonderful DD's, Enjoli (9) and Emily (7) that make life so much more fun! I, Mollie, studied Nutrition so I try to make most of our meals healthy while still tasting great! Our girls love helping us cook...and eat! We're vegetarian and love eating healthy without missing any flavor! We try to eat mostly vegan, so we have many vegan recipes posted. We are world traveling missionaries and students that have visited many countries and have lived in the States, South Korea, and are currently in the Philippines. So we always need to adjust our menu based on the food available. Zaar has been a tremendous help!
