Pioneer Woman's Hot Chocolate, Slightly Modified

"I usually make hot chocolate with cocoa powder, but being out of that ingredient, I tried the Pioneer Woman's recipe that calls for semi-sweet chocolate chips. The result was rich and creamy, even though I used four cups of milk rather than the milk/half-n-half mixture her recipe called for. I wondered if I could combine the chips and milk enough to be rid of any tiny chocolate flakes; I came close, but a few remained. Another member of our Christmas tree-cutting party told me how much she enjoyed the hot chocolate, because of the tiny chocolate flakes in it :) (and the tiny splash of peppermint schnapps my husband added to it), so the hot chocolate turned out perfectly.  "

directions

  • Warm the milk in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat. .
  • Stir in chocolate chips. Stir until melted ("though there will still be lovely particles of chocolate throughout," the Pioneer Woman's words, not mine.).
  • If it's too chocolatey for you, splash in a little more milk. If it's not quite sweet enough for you, add 1 teaspoon sugar (I added the sugar).
  • Serve in mugs, and it should be rich and creamy, and perhaps even better with whipped cream and/or marshmallows.

I love how cooking brings people together, whether it's sharing recipes or sharing a special meal. My sister and I love to talk recipes, and she is great at researching any recipe questions and hunting down recipes. My whole family enjoys cooking, so holidays are particularly fun when we're all cooking together. I teach social studies, and I incorporate historical recipes and foods into my lessons about culture. Cooking connects the past and present. I've realized how relaxing cooking is to me, so despite being very busy with teaching, I make time to cook.
