OAMC Dog Food

"My 12 yr old, 20 lb. Westie loves this food, and the Vet thinks it is the best for a dog of any age, but particularly good for this old guy who has kidney problems. It takes only a few hours and there is plenty for the month. You will also need a huge bowl, snack size baggies and 4 gallon freezer bags. I'd say without a doubt my dog gives it 5 stars!"

 • Roast the turkey without adding any spices or basting. Cool, de-skin and de-bone (this is the messiest part). While you do this, microwave the rice, white or brown. Put the turkey meat in a food grinder or cuisinart. Mix the meat and rice and wheat germ together while you microwave the vegetables. Add the vegetables. Expect a happy running around dog while you do this! Now put it by handfuls into the snack size baggies, each is about 5 ounces, 7 to a freezer bag. Freeze 3 bags of 7, keep one out for this week. My dog is fairly small, so if you have a bigger dog, use sandwich bags-then of course it won't be quite so many servings.
 • I also had good luck with using ground turkey, 3-5 lbs, fried in a fry pan, and also used a large frozen breast that I baked, so there were no bones, skin or carcass to contend with, but still had to mess with the cuisinart to grind the breast.
 • Turkey is completely safe for dogs as long as it is cooked well and has no skin,.

 1. I have a 7 month old Bichon and she has always eaten home-made food. Chicken is her favorite but she has had turkey. According to my vet, as long as I feed her a balanced meal of vegies, carbs, proteins and fruit she will be fine( and tomato juice helps with the dead grass in your yard, if you know what I mean. AND she is picture perfect and I was even able to stop the "bleeding" from the eyes by feeding her only white meats and fish! I will be trying this recipe but with mixed vegies and long grain brown rice. Thank you!

 2. I used white meat chicken because I got it on sale and ground it up myself with a food processor. my dog loved this food. I only made half for a trial run to make sure she liked it, and she did. She DOVE for the bowl of food.

 3. Thanks, MorMor, for this make-ahead dog food recipe. Our dog loves it. This is a safe, healthy recipe as long as you remove the skin from the turkey and make sure your dog gets only the turkey meat, not the skin.

The information in Chef #879010's review is incomplete and misleading. Turkey meat is not harmful to dogs. Turkey skin, in large quantities, can cause pancreatitis, which is very serious. As long as you remove the skin, the turkey meat won't hurt your dog. This information comes from our vet who has over 30 years experience owning a busy, successful veterinary practice. You can also verify it online at Dr. Eric Barchas' VetBlog: http://blogs.dogster.com/vet_blog_information_advice/is-turkey-bad-for-dogs/
