Anne's New York Beef Stew

"There are a couple of ingredients that I cannot live without...ketchup and mayonaise. This beef stew recipe has the ketchup! It is one of my favorites! This is now a second generation recipe that I scribbled on a 3x5 scrap of paper as my mother dictated it to me over the phone many years ago. The paper is now very yellow. It needed a good home and to be remembered. As the stew cooks, be sure to stir and if you feel it needs it, add water - the gravy should not be thick."
