  1. Heat oven to 375.
  2. In large bowl, beat brown sugar, butter, and shortening until light and fluffy.
  3. Add vanilla and egg and blend well.
  4. Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup and level off.
  5. Add flour, baking soda, and salt and mix well.
  6. Stir in chocolate and nuts.
  7. Drop by tablespoonfuls 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheets.
  8. Bake at 375 for 9 to 12 minutes or until light golden brown.
  9. Cool 1 minute and remove from cookie sheets.
