- 1⁄4 cup lemon juice
- 1⁄4 cup corn oil
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons McCormick's Montreal Brand steak seasoning
- 1 tablespoon seasoning salt
- 3 large garlic cloves, crushed
- 1 tablespoon Kitchen Bouquet, browning & seasoning sauce
- 1 tri-tip steak, trimmed
directions
- Combine all ingredients except tri-tip in a zip-lock bag.
- Add tri-tip and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 6 hours.
- We grill ours slowly over coals is best, but gas is fine. We will be smoking it this summer too.

This is a great tri-tip marinade! Not sure how long ago I found this recipe while searching for gluten-free options (Food website does not retain publish date), but I believe it’s at least 10 years ago when the recipe hit my repertoire. As most are want to do, I made slight adjustments: first, I use gluten-free soy sauce and eliminate the salt - which balances the salt aspect. Here’s the kicker from my perspective: after buying a Costco bag-o-tri-tip, I split the tri-tip into three or four freezer bags, and place two tri-tips in each bag. The marinade is mixed in a blender, then poured into each bag dividing evenly. Squeeze out the air and place carefully in the freezer. When we want tri-tip I place a bag in the fridge a day or so before grilling to allow a safe and adequate defrost. Heat the grill to 700 degrees;,turn off one side of the grill; sear each side of steaks about a minute each; place the steaks on the side with burners off, maintain grill at 250 degrees: check internal temp 135; remove from grill and rest for ten minutes minimum. Perfect every time no matter what size of tri-tip used. Thank you for the inspiration!
