How to Make Purple Lavender-Infused Lemonade

You won’t find any food coloring here, just one secret ingredient that lends a very vibrant hue.

Lemonades All Around

With our step-by-step guide you'll learn how to make this perfectly balanced lavender lemonade, plus two more summery lemonade infusions. Cheers!

STEP ONE: GATHER YOUR INGREDIENTS

Make sure to choose dried “culinary” lavender when preparing the syrup for this lemonade, as it goes through an extra sifting process to remove stems and dirt particles that you don’t want floating in your drink!

STEP TWO: SWEETEN UP

To make the syrup, combine dried lavender buds, sugar and water in a small pot and bring to a boil, stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved. Then remove the syrup from the heat and stir in the zest of one lemon.

STEP THREE: SIT BACK & STEEP

Now you’ve got some free time — so kick back and relax while the lavender syrup steeps for an hour. After that, just strain the syrup through a sieve lined with cheesecloth or a paper towel to remove every last bud.

STEP FOUR: BREW SO BLUE

Time for the secret ingredient that gives this lemonade its lovely purple color (because dried lavender just doesn’t cut it in that department): butterfly pea flower tea! This vibrant blue tea is easy to find online in tea bags or loose, so brew up two cups and let it cool before using.

STEP FIVE: MAIN SQUEEZE

Lemonade tastes infinitely better when made with freshly-squeezed juice, so break out the citrus reamer or electric juicer to speed things up, as you’ll need four large lemons or eight small lemons to make this batch.

STEP SIX: WATCH THE MAGIC HAPPEN

Magical color transformation alert! In a large bowl or pitcher, combine the lavender syrup, butterfly pea flower tea and lemon juice and marvel as the color morphs from a deep ocean blue to a majestic magenta purple — no artificial food coloring required.

STEP SEVEN: TASTES LIKE SUMMER

Desperate for a sip? Understandable, so go ahead and serve this beauty over lots of ice and garnish with lavender sprigs for the full floral effect.
