directions

  • Cook green beans (you can steam the fresh ones about 15-18 minutes; or fix frozen according to pkg directions, or heat canned).
  • Saute onion in bacon fat or butter/margarine until tender and starting to turn brown.
  • Mix cornstarch, salt, mustard, brown sugar, and vinegar together with 1/2 cup of the water from the green beans.
  • Add this to the onions in the pan and cook, stirring, until slightly thickened.
  • Drain the cooked green beans and mix into the thickened onions; adjust salt and pepper and stir, coating green beans and cooking until reheated if necessary.
  • Top with crumbled bacon and serve.

  1. Super simple and oh, so tasty! My fiance couldn't stop complimenting them and my daughter loved them, too. I thought they were a great alternative to butter, salt, and pepper like we usually have on our veggies. It helps to snip the slices of bacon into 1/4 inch pieces as they are added to the pan (I used 5 slices, we like bacon) so you don't have to handle it hot. It cooks faster that way, too. Sauce was quick and very flavorful. Will definitely make again (and again)!

  2. These were a big hit tonight with DH. I used frozen cut green beans and red wine vinegar. These went very well with Swedish Meatballs. Thanks for a quick way to dress up frozen beans.

  3. My family just love this recipe! Instead of frying bacon, I use the dried crumbled bacon that you can buy in a jar-less fat. Also I used french cut green beans-I have to double the recipe for my family of four! Sometimes when I make this, this is all I want to eat! So good! Thank you for posting!

  4. Made this last night for dinner. Thought it would go well with the meatloaf and mashed potatoes. However, the sauce was alittle much. I would try this recipe again but I'd drain the excess sauce before serving. Happy Holidays!

  5. I thought this recipe was great. My DH doesn't like mustard or onions so he said it would taste good minus those things. I really expected to get this one by him, I cook with things he doesn't like all the time and he never really seems to notice...he he he. It's amazing what you can get them to eat sometimes. :) I will be making this again and again, even if it's only for me. Thanks for sharing such a yummy recipe.
