There’s no celebration that couldn’t be made better by Fudgie the Whale. The signature Carvel cake is a cult favorite, referenced by TV writers and ironic hipsters everywhere. And with Father’s Day just around the corner (on June 17th), Dad may be feverish to find that Fudgie is getting a fermented makeover.

The Captain Lawrence Brewing Company has created a limited-edition “Fudgie the Beer” stout in honor of the beloved ice cream cake. The brew is perfectly drinkable on its own, but really stands out when blended into a Fudgie the Whale Father’s Day Float.

While these days we are seeing more and more collaborations between small breweries and big companies, many are limited in availability; normally you have to visit the brewery to get in on the action.

It’s still true that the Fudgie the Beer stout will only be sold at the Captain Lawrence Brewery in Elmsford, New York ($18 for a four-pack of 16-ounce cans), but the recipe for the Fudgie’s Father’s Day Float is available online, and can be made with any brand of stout beer.

To make the float, combine 12 ounces of stout beer with 4 cups of Carvel’s Fudgie the Whale cake in a blender and blend to your desired consistency. Put those Carvel crunchy bits around the rim and top it all off with whipped cream and chocolate syrup.

"Fudgie the Whale holds a special place in the hearts of many Americans, including, of course, fathers," said Carvel president Scott Colwell in a statement. "This year, through Carvel's partnership with Captain Lawrence, we're happy to give dad two of his favorite things: a Carvel ice cream cake and a unique handcrafted beer."

That may be a grand and vaguely heteronormative assumption, but if your daddy-o fits the bill, blend away for Father’s Day.
