Will they follow through?

What may have started out as an innocent bet between a light beer brand and a football player has suddenly taken on new significance, as the Philadelphia Eagles head to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2004.

Back at Eagles training camp in July, before the preseason even started, right tackle Lane Johnson was feeling good about the upcoming season. Speaking to reporters, he noted that he had something to prove to the good people of Philadelphia.

"I think if we have a few big years and make the playoffs, if we win a Super Bowl, I'm giving out beer to everybody," he told ESPN.

Everybody is, of course, a vague term. Yet thankfully, Bud Light jumped in to clarify, and lightheartedly up the stakes.

“.@LaneJohnson65 Let's make a bet. Win it all and the party is on us. Deal?” it tweeted on August 2nd.

Fast forward to today. The Eagles are set to play in the Super Bowl on February 4th, and we can almost see the social media managers’ heads rolling down the halls of the Bud Light offices.

Bud Light has had enormous success over the past two years with its “Dilly Dilly” advertisements, which are frequently broadcast during sports games. The catchphrase has become a viral phenomenon, and is now used amongst Bud Light drinkers as a replacement for “cheers.”

All eyes are on the light beer brand now to see if they’ll follow through on their very public wager. According to ESPN’s calculations, buying a $3 beer for every adult Philadelphian would set the buyer back about $3 million.

It would be a tall order, but it’s not like they couldn’t afford it: Bud Light parent AB InBev is worth somewhere in the (foot)ballpark of $213 billion. And citizens of the City of Brotherly Love aren’t about to forget about that promise.
