  1. If using already ground split peas omit step 2, 3 and 4.
  2. Place split peas in a pot with 6 cups water and bring to a boil. Lower the heat to simmer and cook until soft ( about 45 mins).
  3. Drain and place in a food processor.
  4. Grind to a coarse ,meal, resembling couscous.
  5. Add the garlic, turmeric, cumin, baking powder, flour salt and pepper to the ground split peas.
  6. Gradually add one cup water to the split pea mixture, stirring to form a thick batter.
  7. Heat oil in a deep frying pan and drop the batter into the oil by the tablespoonful. Fry until golden brown, turning often.
  8. Remove from oil and drain on a plate with paper towels.
  9. Serve with your favourite chutney.
