Black-eyed pea

A small beige bean with a black circular "eye" at the inner curve. Originally cultivated for animal fodder, but now a popular legume. The black-eyed pea is thought to have been introduced to the United States through the African slave trade. If the "eye" is yellow, called a yellow-eyed pea.
