I spent most of my childhood trudging off to explore the shadowy forests on one of the small mountains which was behind my parents cabin situated on Cottonwood Road on the outskirts of Chewelah, Wa. Mom would pack me a lunch and put a jar of Kool-Aid in the sack for me. I was usually given a ripe tomato from her garden for my dessert. Her home-made bread sandwiches such as, freshly churned butter slathered on 2 thick slices and topped with either sliced green peppers, radishes or cucumbers [ or all 3] and salted and peppered [ or even lightly sugared] were to die for. Mom's fresh produce from her labors of love for her family instilled in me the desire to be a great [from scratch] cook and above all a great mom for my family. It has never come to pass that my breads or pie crusts have tasted like hers, but my family has followed my traditions of home cooking , so I'd say that is a pretty good compliment for me.
