Hi there my name is Jarrad and I am a semi homesick Australian currently living/working/studying in China. Ive been here for a year now and have gotten quite used to the different: over populated/no personal space/ Having only a hand full of people being a able to understand what I'm saying lifestyle but I really do miss western food. Let me set the scene it Sunday night around 6 o'clock its dark outside(in fact, pitch black) windy and snowing heavily. Its around dinner time and my thoughts start drifting off to visions of a hot pot roast or even at far stretch mum's Sunday roast beef with dumplings and vegetables with all the trimmings... Then I come crashing back to reality and think of what food is actually available at the local restaurant downstairs next to the special massage parlor. The choices are heartbreaking, either some suspicious looking boiled meet with deep fried vegetables or some cold scrambled eggs with tomato, eggplant sautee'd with oil and some pigs skin also glazed with oil. Heartbreaking, I know. So yesterday I finally had enough and since the Chinese have not yet caught on to the modern marvel called the oven I took the only other option and went out a bought myself a shinny new pressure cooker. I can't wait to get back onto the cooking wagon and bringing some spice back into my and my friends meals... ps. I have just read over my profile and feel as though I need to add that China is a lovely culturally enriched society with warmth and family values that the west would envy and the foods are delicious its just that I need a fix of western style food.
