DIRECTIONS

  • Scald 1/2 cup milk; cool; add yeast;
  • Add 1 teaspoon sugar.
  • proof dough.
  • Cream shortening, sugar, salt, nutmeg, and lemon rind.
  • Add egg; mix.
  • Add 1-1/2 cups milk.
  • Add flour.
  • ( i needed a little more milk ).
  • Knead; place in a greased bowl; let rise until doubled.
  • Roll out; cut doughnuts.
  • Let rise 10 minutes.
  • Fry until golden in deep fat 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • You can shake doughnuts in sugar or glaze.
