Also, you add the extra 4 cups of water in addition to the water that is added to 1/2" above the beans?

I took Okra4540's advice re: the sweetness problem & doctored the recipe up a bit. I give it 4 stars because of the heavy load of different sweeteners the recipe calls for--however, my doctored up version was delicious! I used all the same ingredients, but I used equal amounts of the sweet things (molasses, brown sugar, maple syrup, & ketchup). For the number of servings in the original recipe, I would use 1/4 c of all the sweeteners. I cut the recipe in 1/2, so I only used 2 TBSP of each (& then 1/2 the amount of the rest of the ingredients). Also, as I was doing this the day of--not the night before, I made my beans on the stove & then put it all together & baked it for 1/2 hour. I used about 1 cup of the water reserved from preparing the beans & also 1 TBSP of oil to help it all congeal in the oven. This all sounds like a whole different recipe--but it is really the same one & less sweet. The only other modification I made was that I used Smoked Paprika, & it added to the flavor!

I'm not going to rate this (so it won't affect your average rating) because I tried this against my better judgment. As so often happens with baked bean recipes, I found this to be way, way too sweet for my taste, even though I didn't add the syrup. Even adding more onion, some turkey bacon, and some cider vinegar didn't remove enough of the sweetness so I could enjoy it. This isn't a criticism of the recipe itself, it's more a warning for those who are like me and don't care for so much sweet.
