Pie-Iron Pizza (Girl Scout Campout)

"This was a little something my best friends and I sort of started when we were all one big (5-person) Girl Scout troop. They're really great for campouts and are especially good on cold days. You will need a pie-iron and a fire outdoors in order to make this one."

directions

  • Take two slices of bread and butter on one side on each slice.
  • Put each slice into the individual pie-irons, buttered-side down.
  • On the non-buttered side of one of the bread slices, take a spoonful of the pizza sauce and spread over the bread. Be careful not to put too much sauce on, or you'll end up with huge mess.
  • Sprinkle mozeralla cheese over the sauce and take a slice or two of pepperoni and put those on top of the the cheese.
  • Close up the pie-iron tightly and stick it into the fire pit. Make sure you have the iron in a hot part of the fire and keep the grip handle out far enough that it won't get too hot and burn your hands when you have to remove it.
  • Cook the pie-iron pizza for two minutes. Depending on circumstances, you may have to cook them longer or not, but two minutes usually does the trick. Then you're done and you can remove the pie-iron. Make sure to check that the pizza bread is a golden brown on the outside, like it's been toasted. Then let it sit for a few minutes to cool off.

  1. Classic camping recipe! We bring a couple other topping options to use too. Be careful you don't stick the irons directly in the fire if you have cheap ones, they will crack and/or melt, but true cast iron ones can go right on the fire/coals. If you're patient, you can use real pizza dough instead of the bread if you squish it out real thin and make sure it cooks all the way through. Thanks for posting :-)

  3. We have made these for several years now. We call them pizza pockets. You said to stick the pie iron into the fire pit. We have found that if you put the iron directly into the coals the iron will crack and or break. We always tell our family and friends to hold them up into the flames, and to turn them often. We have a cottage at the lake and make these often. I fry hamburger and sausage both, and cut up pepperoni for a choice, or to use together for a supreme pizza. I also serve chopped onion, chopped green pepper, and mushrooms, as well as the mozzerella cheese. To each his own on the fixins. Most everyone loves them.

  4. This brings back memories of camping trips with our good friends when the kids were growing up. We used ground beef we cooked at home before we left. These are really yummy!!! If I could count how many of these we made, it would be amazing. Thanks for reminding me about them.

I'm 19 and I plan on attending a liberal art college. Though my favorite things in the world are anime, manga, and video games, cooking is in there as another favorite activity. I role-play a black mage, hence the name you see above. I don't have a favorite cookbook unless you count the one I'm in the process of putting together. My passion is drawing and writing and I plan to be a writer. It's been my dream since I was six years old and I never plan on giving it up. I found this site in my sophomore year of high school when I had to do a project for my Home Ec. class, and I was hooked, to say the least. Then I finally decided to join, regardless of the fact I'm probably one of the youngest people on here at the moment. But I don't care, I love cooking. (Yes, I am a geek.)
