Old-Fashioned Chocolate Applesauce Cake

- 1 cup sugar
- 1⁄2 cup Crisco shortening
- 1 beaten egg
- 1 cup applesauce
- 1 cup sour milk
- 2 1⁄2 cups flour
- 3 tablespoons dry cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1⁄2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1⁄2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1⁄2 cup chopped walnuts
- 1⁄2 cup golden raisin
directions
- Soak the raisins in hot water for 15 minutes, then drain.
- Cream together the sugar and crisco. Add the beaten egg and the applesauce.
- Sprinkle a small amound of flour over the nuts and raisins and blend.
- Add the dry ingredients and the sour milk (To make sour milk put 1 Table. vinegar into 1 cup milk and let stand for a few minutes) to the applesauce mixture, alternating as you mix and add.
- Stir in the vanilla, nuts and raisins.
- Bake in a one-layer cake pan (9" x 13") at 350 degrees for 30 minutes, or until the cake tests done.
- Let the cake cool and then spread with your favorite frosting (or combine 2 cups. powdered sugar, 3 Tablespoons butter, 2 teaspoons vanilla, 3 Tablespoons cream or milk and a pinch of salt).
