Old-Fashioned Chocolate Applesauce Cake

  • Soak the raisins in hot water for 15 minutes, then drain.
  • Cream together the sugar and crisco. Add the beaten egg and the applesauce.
  • Sprinkle a small amound of flour over the nuts and raisins and blend.
  • Add the dry ingredients and the sour milk (To make sour milk put 1 Table. vinegar into 1 cup milk and let stand for a few minutes) to the applesauce mixture, alternating as you mix and add.
  • Stir in the vanilla, nuts and raisins.
  • Bake in a one-layer cake pan (9" x 13") at 350 degrees for 30 minutes, or until the cake tests done.
  • Let the cake cool and then spread with your favorite frosting (or combine 2 cups. powdered sugar, 3 Tablespoons butter, 2 teaspoons vanilla, 3 Tablespoons cream or milk and a pinch of salt).
