Have made these for over 40 yrs. One thing most people do wrong is you have to bring to a FULL ROLLING boil, before you start counting your minutes. That means the whole pan has to be bubbling up before counting, #1 thing people get wrong. Another is just like candy you can not make these if it is damp or foggy outside, they will not set up. The recipe I use calls for 1 stick of butter/ margarine, and I like to put 1/2 cup coconut in place of 1/2 c. Oatmeal. I use the quick oats/ have used both types. I always just give it a little longer boil just to be on the safe side. Have made as many as 3 batches at one time but it is hard too get them all out of pan before they harden. You can put just about anything in you want to, nuts, dates, etc. Hope this helps some people who have failed, to try again! These really are good and easy once you get the hang of it. Good Luck!

Great Recipe. I like making them with the recipe exactly as listed- so delicious. But recently I was low/ out of the ingredients called for so I replaced part of the peanut butter with Nutella, I only had 2 cups of oats, so I substituted the last cup with chia seeds, I use almond extract instead of vanilla and Hershey's special dark chocolate cocoa powder since that is what I had. Next time I am going to add slivered almonds to the recipe and keep the substitutions.

These were very good, but I made some healthy changes... I used a little less than a cup of sugar (and they were still SUPER sweet, so I can't imagine double that amount). I used almond milk and a mix of almond and peanut butter. I used coconut oil instead of butter and a little less oats than called for. Also a pinch I cinnamon really kicked it up a notch.
