ingredients
- 2 (750 ml) bottles merlot
- 3 cups orange juice, freshly squeezed
- 3 cups pineapple juice
- 1 1⁄2 cups lemon juice, freshly squeezed
- 3⁄4 cup sugar
- 36 whole cloves
- 4 cinnamon sticks
- 3⁄4 cup water
directions
- In a large stainless steel stockpot, combine all ingredients.
- Place over medium heat and bring to a simmer.
- Reduce heat to very low and keep warm for about 30 minutes to let the flavours blend.
- Strain out the cloves and the cinnamon before serving.
- Ladle in to heatproof cups.

I used this recipe as the basis and then modified as follows: the juice of 6 oranges, 3 cups of white grape juice (because that's what I had on-hand), the juice of 2 lemons, reduced cloves to 18 whole, added 1 whole star of anise, and omitted the water. I also sliced one orange and one lemon to garnish the individual mugs. It was a hit, everyone loved it. We had to make another batch the next night. Thank you for such a wonderful recipe. We will be enjoying this drink every winter.Reply
