Masterful Meatloaf

"This is from the Retro Diner Comfort Food From the American Roadside Cookbook... a very classic blue plate type meatloaf that will take you back to 'the old days'. I do recommend that you drain some of the grease off midway, and then put the topping on afterwards; (or at least add more) otherwise the topping slides off with the grease! You can really brown it up near the end by putting it under the broiler for just a couple minutes. My family really enjoyed this - but beware, this is not the healthiest meatloaf!"

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • In a large bowl soak bread crumbs in milk.
  • Add beef, pork, eggs, onion, salt, pepper and sage.
  • Mix well with your hands and pat into a 9x13 loaf pan.
  • In a separate bowl mix together brown sugar, ketchup, dry mustard, and nutmeg. Pour over meat loaf.
  • Bake 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or until lightly browned and a butter knife inserted in center comes out clean.
  • If you have a meat thermometer, the internal temperature should be 180 degrees.
  • Serve with baked potatoes, mashed potatoes, baked beans or green beans.
