Combine dry ingredients, cut in shortening thoroughly, stir in buttermilk. Dough should be a soft, sticky putty (barely able to pick up and handle). Round up dough on floured board. Knead 5 times or until it will hold together. Roll out or pat to about 1/2" thick. Cut with floured biscuit cutter.
Pour a thick layer of oil in baking pan. Put each biscuit in pan in oil, then turn over. Bake at 450 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.
