Homemade Carpet Freshener

"We have cats and dogs and once a month I ”treat” the house using this. I use mostly lavender and rosemary oil but also like lemongrass or peppermint. They say that using lavender and rosemary it not just refreshes but it keeps away fleas and moths. I think that makes sense because I make soap that I use on our dogs and that also uses rosemary as one of the ingredients. If you have friends that like Potpourri as a gift they will also like this.Once you have made this and like it, try to buy the rosemary and lavender in bulk."

  • Add the lavender and rosemary, mix and then put in a plastic bag or glass container.
  • Without the essential oil it is ready to use, otherwise leave for 2-3 days so the oil will not be wet anymore, (that can cause stains on the carpet! always check before use) To use: sprinkle desired amount on the carpet, leave for a few hours then vacuum.

  1. This smelled wonderful! I whirled the lavender and the rosemary in the blender to break it down a little and sprinkled on my rug. After I vacuumed it I got down and smelled the rug, it smelled so clean! Thanks for an easy treatment I will be using alot!!!

  2. I love this. Just chopped up a cup of fresh rosemary into two cups of baking soda, sprinkled on the carpet and vacuumed up about 1/2 an hour later. The carpets smell lovely but there isn't a weird "chemical" scent coming off them... just freshness. And dang was that cheap.

  3. essential oils are HIGHLY TOXIC to cats.

  4. I had off work yesterday and was doing some major cleaning. I normally use carpet fresh but wanted to give this a try as hubby has allergies and is not fond of the smell of carpet fresh. This worked great. Since you add your own ingredients, I could control the strength of the smell. I will be using this in the future!

  5. Rainy weather, 3 large dogs, very small house, company coming and no "Carpet Fresh" Yikes!!! Zaar (or PetsRUs) to the rescue. I went in the garden, chopped off some lavender, pulled a bunch - well many bunches of mint and a bunch of rosemary. Micked the herbs til dry and tossed everything in the food pro til it was powder. LOVED IT!!! I will never buy the stuff again as I hate the sweet, powdery smell. This was herbal, fresh and very clean smelling. Thank you so much!

Hello, my name is Bonnie and I am a very beautiful cat as you can see if you look at the picture at the top of this page.... What??.. I am supposed to talk about you??? But it says here: About Me!! Well all right then ...... My mom is Dutch and has moved to England in October 2007, after living 15 years in the Netherlands with my English dad. They don’t have any human children and “created” their own family, which means I have to share them with Hannah, she is a 6 years old tortie cat, Abby the dog, she is a 9 year old Beagle, and a one year old black Miniature Pincher named Poppy, I refuse to tell you my age but I am a georgious lilac British Shorthair cat!! It is obvious she adores pets just by looking at her name she uses on Zaar (many on Zaar call her Pets or Petsie Poo), her name in real life is Annelies and that is a common Dutch name. My mom always liked to cook, but since she joined Zaar it got out of control, and it doesn’t help that she is disorganized. Printed recipes everywhere in the house, the recipe binders have got bigger and just between you and me, her hips too!!! I have lived in Holland all of my life until now, but they lived in several different countries/places:- desert and coastal Oman, up North and West in Holland, Vancouver-Canada, Aberdeen- Scotland and in Norway they lived in Bergen and Oslo. We have all moved together to England, as you can see I’ve already learnt the language! I heard her say to Dad that this is the last time she moved to another country...she's had it with moving from one place to another! ( its her age...she's getting grumpy) Mom is 55 years old but I always hear her say that the date of her birthday does not mean that much to her, the date of her cancer anniversary is more important, because so far she is a survivor. Besides cooking she has other interests too, crafts, gardening and soap making. She likes Zaar and is one of the hosts on the German-Benelux Forum here on RecipeZaar. She would like to thank everybody who tries and comments on the recipes she has posted on Recipezaar, your feedback is very much appreciated.
