  1. This is an excellent recipe to put to use those apples God made. There are a few things that I found important in making this recipe taste good though. The apples you use can make or break this recipe. I made this recipe with granny smith apples, and it was pretty good, but nothing really special. Now, when I used Missourri galas, it was extraordinary. My mom said it was better than any apple pie she has had in restaurants. The sweetness of the MO galas really made the difference, and the granny smith's paled in comparison with their tartness. I also used Penzey's spices cinammon which is still fairly new (this is a blend of about 4 different kinds of cinammon). If you ever get ahold of that cinammon, you won't regret it. Don't forget to top each piece off with one or two scoops of vanilla ice cream. Choose a fairly normal or old fashioned vanilla ice cream that doesn't have a fakey vanilla taste like you would find in Blue Bunny for example. We actually found a decent, but cheap brand at Aldi called Sundae Shop that worked very well on top of this brown betty.

  2. Just made this and it's delicious! I only had 5 apples so I put mine in a 9X3 baking dish but still used the same amount of topping ingredients. It came out rich and gooey and utterly scrumptious.

  3. FOR SHAME! This is Peggy Hill's recipe that she has been baking since 1974 until the year she dies, inclusive. You have to use Margerine NOT Butter.

  4. This IS NOT my grandma's brown betty! This is more like apple crisp. The difference between a betty and a crisp is the betty uses bread (sometimes cake) crumbs or small cubes, while a crisp uses a flour/butter crumb mixture.

  5. I made this recipe two days in a row! My very picky family LOVED it!! Its so easy and the end result is so delicious! Thank you for the recipe, I know I'll use it for years to come... one thing I did different was to add nutmeg when I added the cinnamon over the apples

Tweaks

  1. Here’s my tweak. There is no thickener in the filling so I added 3 tbs of the flour/ brown sugar topping mixture to the apple Filling before cutting the butter into the topping mixture. Without this tweak there was a lot of liquid on the bottom after baking. Also I added 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts mixed with 2 tbs of melted butter and 2 tbs of brown. sugar sprinkled evenly over the topping before putting into the oven. Came out delicious.

  2. This was the 1st pie I baked, by myself, and I've never made anything easier. I usually make at least 2, 1 I add pecans to & it's wonderful.
