  1. Thank you for saving this recipe. Sunny Select no longer prints this recipe on the bag. When I made the soup I substituted 1 lb. cooked bacon & one teaspoon of bacon grease. Not the healthiest recipe, but it was a big hit with everyone that has had it. I serve the soup with diced ham, shredded cheese, green onions and bacon bits ( just like a Pea Anderson's did in the past)

  2. I have used this recipe for years. Perfect every time. A couple tricks I have used over the years. I prefer a thicker soup, so I sometimes add dehydrated potato flakes if the soup needs thickening. After I remove the ham bone, ham pieces, and bay leaf, I use my blender stick and make it a bit smoother. Be sure to add the ham chunks back after blending. I love the addition of thyme. I also add a chicken bouillon seasoning at times to boost the flavor. Thanks for posting!

  3. I combined this recipe (minus the ham) with a dumpling recipe (https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/6900/dumplings/) and it came out terrific. The dumplings made the soup into a large meal with plenty of leftovers for breakfast tomorrow morning.

  4. So Flavorful. I added more onion, carrots, celery, and cut up pork.

  5. My family loves this recipe. I leave out the veggies, and I add garlic and it is so good even the kids eat it.
