Crock Pot Ham

"A while ago someone asked for a recipe for crock pot ham, Diana Neal suggested doing it with pineapple and brown sugar so last night I experimented and this recipe is the result. Mitchell hams are a small solid ham but you can adjust this recipe to accommodate any size or type of ham Do not over cook it. The raisin sauce is so easy and tastes great. Since this is a first try recipe I would ask anyone that tries this recipe to please send in comments and any adjustments that you make I feel it has a way to go before it is just right."

  1. This was EXCELLENT! Bought myself a Crockpot Sunday and made this yesterday (monday). It tasted a bit like the spiral ham that I usually make...but this was much much cheaper. The only thing I did differently was that I added an enevelope of brown gravey mix into the ingrediants. The taste on mashed patatoes was excellent! Since it was about 90 degrees here yesterday...it was great to have a good dinner without having to turn on the oven!! Definetly a keeper!!!!!!

  2. I think this recipe is already just right. I tried this last night using a frozen 3 lb. ham. My crockpot only cooks on high, so I use frozen meat so it won't be overdone. I used 15.5 oz. of crushed pineapple, and I added two small (single-serving) cans of pineapple juice. I used ground cloves, pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. I used Louisiana cane sugar, and I added a couple of extra spoonfuls b/c of the added juice. After the ham had cooked 5 hours, I added a cup of raisins. At that time, I sliced the ham and put it back in the pot for an hour before serving it with Baked Beans by Richard and instant loaded mashed potatoes (by Idahoan). Dinner was excellent, and the leftovers I had today were even better. I plan to serve this at my holiday get-together. It's a great, simple recipe!

  3. I used a cheap 5 lb boneless ham and cut it in half lengthwise. I doubled the recipe. The flavor of the cloves blended perfectly with the sweetness of the pinapple making a cheap ham taste great. I cooked it in the crockpot for about 5 hours at a combination of low and high.

  4. This was very easy and good. I followed the recipe exactly (right down to the Mitchell's Black Forest Ham!). When I went to put the raisins in, I found that the shallots were not close to being done, so I put up the crockpot to high for the last hour. When I took the ham out, the shallots were still not done, so I put the sauce in a small pot and simmered it while I was making the side dishes. It was done in about 10 minutes. It simmered down into an almost chutney-like consistency. The sauce was not as sweet as I expected, and was very good. I found when I had the sauce the next day, the clove flavour really dominated, so I would next time remove them before refridgerating it. Nice recipe!

  5. I have a similar recipe that has maraschino cherries instead of the raisins. very good!

On January 10 2010 I will celebrate 9 years of Life with Zaar. I can't imagine being without it! It has become part of my daily routine. I feel very privileged to be one of the hosts on the Photo Forum. Taking photos of my culinary efforts is a full time hobby and I love it. My friends all know what to expect when they come to dinner "Are you finished taking pictures?" or "Did you get a photo of so & so?" I never let them wait too long and the food is NEVER cold! I now have over 6000 photos on Zaar - some fairly good and some definitely not so good. I am happy to say that practice does help. My roots are in Vancouver BC Canada - a very beautiful city that holds many wonderful memories for me. In 1990, I decided that for my retirement years I may want to settle in a smaller community and found a slice of heaven in the North Okanagan B.C. I love living here but every once in a while I miss the bright city lights, the Broadway shows and some of the small wonderful ethnic restaurants that Vancouver abounds in. That is easily resolved. I just take a trip to the coast, visit with friends for a weekend see a show and feast on Dim Sum or other specialty foods. I am getting a bit long in the tooth but was a very adventurous person. I have river rafted Hell's Gate on the Fraser river, been up in a glider over Hawaii (no not a Hang Glider!), gone hot air ballooning in the Napa Valley & the Fraser Valley, driven dune buggies on the dunes in Oregon, Para sailing in Mexico and tried many other adventurous, challenging, fun things. I have yet to try bungee jumping or sky diving. I may do them yet. I love to travel and experience other cultures. Mexco has been a favorite haunt. I have visited that lovely country many many times. Australia is another favorite as is England! In the past 16 months I have taken off 61 pounds and feel wonderful. I am off all medications and all systems are GO! In years I may be 79 but in spirit I am still in my forties. We are only as old as we allow ourselves to feel. Always think positive. Do something a bit challenging every day & always do something silly every day. Be a kid again! Laugh every day - it is internal jogging.
