"I like to make a batch of this overnight to use in whatever I'm cooking the next day. The smell of the onions slowly caramelizing overnight lends to very sweet dreams!"

  • Combine onions, margarine and salt in a crock pot.
  • Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours.

  1. So do I need to use already melted butter or can I slice up a stick and throw it on top?
     
  2. I don't use my crock pots often... but I have a large 5 qt crock pot, is that too big to try this with? (It always says to fill it to the 3/4 point... which I usually can't, so just don't use it! lol)

  1. I made these exactly as listed and they were fantastic. I squished them down into an ice tray that I sprayed with oil and froze them, popped them out and stored them in a freezer bag. They thawed out perfectly every time I used them. Thanks Mirj!
     
  2. Inturned this recipe into soup, after the onions were carmelized I added 4 cans of beef broth, some thyme and a little bit of dry sherry. Served with the usual crouton and swiss melted on the top, it was fantastic.
     
  3. This is a fabulous recipe! So easy and tasty. I see alot of people posting about how much liquid ia left at the end of cooking - DON'T ignore it! It is packed with delicious onion flavor. I've used the liquid in soups, sauces, beef stew...it adds a deep onion-y flavor. And when you refrigerate the liquid then remove the solidified butter that forms at the top, you have an awesome onion-butter to brown meat, scramble eggs....so many possibilities. Great recipe.
     
  4. You cannot get any easier than this for carmelized onions. I was worried at first, I put them in the old fashioned tall crockpot. You need the surface for them to carmelize properly. I did finally turn it up on high in the am and with 3 hours PERFECT carmelized onions. I mixed them in with garlic mashed potatoes to serve with BBQ ribs. The rest will be turned in French Onion Soup. Thanks Mirj for the great recipe!!!

Tweaks

  1. Got a covered porch/patio/mud room or similar? Run power to the crock pot out there and let cook overnight. In a small house, we found this helpful to keeping everything inside from absorbing the intense aromas.
     
  2. To make these onions a little more 'crispy' like some people have said they like, I just pop them on the stove in a fry pan with a little butter until they get that crunchy outside. It doesn't take long. This way, you can just pull out what you need and they crisp up quickly!
     
  3. Totally effortless and delicious. Since we tend to like our onions a little bit salty, I might add more salt next time instead. Also, I used olive oil instead of margarine and it was great. I'm also thinking of cooking it on high for a while at the end to get them more brown and intense. Either way, great. I just added them to the top of a shepherd's pie and it smells great.
     
  4. I substituted sunflower oil for the butter/margarine and this worked perfectly. Absolutely delicious and couldn't be easier or more useful. Thank you!
