Cracker Barrel Fried Apples

ingredients
- 2 cups apple juice, plus
- 1⁄2 cup apple juice
- 4 large golden delicious apples, with peel,cut 1/2 inch wedges
- 3 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon apple pie spice
- 4 tablespoons sugar
directions
- In a medium skillet, combine the 2 cups apple juice and sliced apples.
- Simmer gently until apples are fork tender but not mushy, turning apples frequently.
- Remove apples from juice using a slotted spoon and place in an oven safe dish.
- In a blender, combine the remaining 1/2 cup apple juice, cornstarch, apple pie spice and sugar.
- Blend a few seconds until smooth.
- Whisk mixture into hot apple juice in skillet and cook, stirring constantly on medium high heat until it bubbles and becomes thickened and smooth.
- Pour thickened mixture over apples and serve.
- Please note the cooking time is an approximate.

As a former Cracker Barrel employee, I can say these are close to the real thing: good, but it needs some tweaking. I think the CB are too sweet, anyhow. We doublesd the apples, used half the sugar, and only 1.5 Tablespoons of cornstarch. It came out very thick, and just the right hint of sweetness. Great with a pork roast, great with pancakes!

I made these for supper tonight. They were DELICIOUS!! I did add real butter to mine, one because I think butter gives everything a better taste. (I remember seeing butter on them at Cracker Barrel.) The hubby is still eating them. He says he will have more before he goes to bed. It is a good thing I made a double batch. I bet there won't be any left when I come home from work tomorrow.

We are huge fans of Cracker Barrel apples! When I first made up the apples according to the recipe....only exception was that I used cinnamon instead of the apple pie spice....I felt like it was close but something was missing. At first I thought they needed a little more sugar. Instead I added 1/3 cup of margarine to the mixture and it was RIGHT ON! The texture and flavor was identical to Cracker Barrel's apples! Thank you for this recipe!!!!

I used 1 tsp cinnamon in place of apple pie spice.I whisked together,no blender required.Mixed apples into thick sauce and served as a side dish with ham for dinner.These apples go very well with pork.Nice flavor,not overly sweet..I will make these again. In place of the usual cranberries...Leftover apples?Updated: I have used leftover apples for dessert crepes #52553. They make a wonderful dessert crepe. I used 3 slices per crepe and sprinkled with chopped pecans 1tblsp.and rolled seam down , placed in greased 13x9.Baked for 10-14 minutes at 375..Served with vanilla sauce.1c water.1/2 cup sugar,2 tsp vanilla,1 tblsp cornstarch,2 tblsp butter.pinch of salt. Boil to thicken..Waste not want not...

I came to this site in March of 2004. It was then called Recipezaar. This site was the first on-line site that I ever joined. I first popped in 2003 while searching for a Peach Cobbler Recipe. In March of 2004, DH was having shoulder surgery and I was looking for a Split Pea Soup. Once again I found myself on Zaar as it came to be called.
Over the years I hung out and learned from some of the best home cooks in the country, I posted over 700 recipes on the site, reviewed over 3500 recipes and posted over 3000 food photos. Over the next 10 years the site made many changes and in 2010 it was sold to to Food Network and became Food.com.
Until last year we played games, talked and shared with one another. As a result of the community and the relationships I built I got to meet some wonderful people from all over the country. I also have a great number of friends that I have never meet face to face. Some of us still hang out at various places across the net.
Zaar was more than a cooking community. It was an internet community of friendship. Life is an adventure ever changing.
