  • Put dates, hot water and 1 tsp.
  • baking soda in a bowl to soak and cool.
  • Cream together 1 cup sugar, margarine, eggs.
  • Sift together flour, salt and 1/4 tsp.
  • baking soda.
  • Add alternately with date mixture and pour into 9x12 baking pan.
  • Sprinkle with 1/2 cup sugar, chocolate chips and nuts.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F for 35 to 45 minutes.
  • Cut into squares.

  1. Thank you my friend. I have not had one of my Grandma June's Beaver Island bars since 1969 in Grand Rapids, MI. The recipe I was left is so old and faded. Many times I attempted to recreate them; hopeful but always unsuccessful. Now it is apparent...I was using too much flour and chocolate and not enough fat. Today is Mother's Day 2019. I am making them tonight to celebrate & treat myself! I will let you know! Fingers crossed!
