Beaver Island Dessert

"A unique dessert that has been in the recipe boxes of Michigan cooks for generations. My recipe is from my Grandmother Felber's recipe box from over fifty years ago. Beaver Island is located in Michigan."

• Yields: 1 9x12 dish

ingredients

• 1 package dates, cut up
• 1 1⁄2 cups hot water
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 1 cup sugar
• 3⁄4 cup margarine
• 2 beaten eggs
• 1 1⁄2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1⁄4 teaspoon baking soda
• 1⁄2 cup sugar
• 1 (6 ounce) package semi-sweet chocolate chips
• 3⁄4 cup nutmeats (walnuts or pecans)

directions

1. Put dates, hot water and 1 tsp.
2. baking soda in a bowl to soak and cool.
3. Cream together 1 cup sugar, margarine, eggs.
4. Sift together flour, salt and 1/4 tsp.
5. baking soda.
6. Add alternately with date mixture and pour into 9x12 baking pan.
7. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup sugar, chocolate chips and nuts.
8. Bake at 350 degrees F for 35 to 45 minutes.
9. Cut into squares.

Thank you my friend. I have not had one of my Grandma June's Beaver Island bars since 1969 in Grand Rapids, MI. The recipe I was left is so old and faded. Many times I attempted to recreate them; hopeful but always unsuccessful. Now it is apparent...I was using too much flour and chocolate and not enough fat. Today is Mother's Day 2019. I am making them tonight to celebrate & treat myself! I will let you know! Fingers crossed!
