Barbecue Meatball Subs

I have been making this recipe for years and the whole family loves it. I must admit that I don't usually like traditional barbecue flavors, but this one is smoky and full of flavor! The key is the liquid smoke (a small bottle will last forever!)

ingredients

Sauce
- 2 cups ketchup
- 1 1⁄2 cups brown sugar
- 1⁄2 cup finely chopped onion
- 1⁄2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1⁄4 teaspoon liquid smoke

Meatballs
- 1 1⁄2 lbs lean ground beef
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1⁄2 cup finely chopped onion
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1⁄8 teaspoon white pepper
- 1⁄2 cup breadcrumbs
- 8 submarine buns
- 1⁄2 cup shredded 2% mexican cheese blend (kraft)
directions
- Combine meatball ingredients and then form into small 1-inch meatballs. Place on baking sheet covered with wax paper and bake at 350 for 12-15 minutes or until done.
- In the meantime, combine the sauce ingredients in large pot and heat over medium-low heat. Add meatballs to sauce once they come out of the oven. Continue to cook on low for 30 minutes.
- Put four meatballs inside each sub bun and sprinkle with shredded cheese.
