directions

  • Follow directions for your machine for a 2-pound loaf of whole wheat bread.
  • Instructions for my machine are: Add all ingredients in the order listed. (I combine the water and powdered milk and heat them in microwave on high for 30 seconds before putting in baking pan and then add the remaining ingredients.).
  • Insert the baking pan into the oven chamber and lock the pan.
  • Select Whole Wheat setting and 2 pound loaf.
  • Press start.
  • When the baking is finished, I like to put the loaf in a large zip lock bag and seal it. Then place on wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Questions & Replies

  1. I'd like to use my old Breadman to make the dough but bake it in the oven. How do I do that?

Reviews

  1. Good recipe. I replaced the margarine with canola oil and added 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon and 3/4 to a cup of raisins at the beep on my bread machine. Awesome cinnamon raisin bread, and even better when toasted.

  2. This was easy and yummy! I didn't have molasses so I just substituted honey and it was very moist, this will be perfect for sandwiches this week!

  3. I replace the molasses with brown sugar. It turns out just fine

  4. Excellent bread. My fourth attempt at bread making with the bread machine and it came out great. Lovely texture and flavour. Just one hiccup it dipped slightly in centre of top. Still learning. I was very careful with the measuring the yeast maybe it was too much liquid. I also used all honey as I had no molasses. It was the first recipe where I saw that you put the milk powder into the water and heat for 30 seconds it's a good way of getting water temperature right. Thanks. Kay Mahon

  5. Janem, Thank you for our Go-To bread recipe. My powdered milk is for camping use only so I use 1 cup milk and 1/2 cup water and unsalted butter in place of the margarine (my DS is on a low sodium diet so its all I have). My family loves this bread, and its wonderful for sandwiches. So simple my 7 year old DD makes it for me sometimes! Thanks again, a total keeper!

Tweaks

  1. I like this recipe how ever in my climate I found it was too wet and wasn’t rising properly being in a very wet climate. I also prefer using coconut milk over water so I do just 2 cups of coconut milk for a 3lbs loaf and leave out the 1/4 cup and it makes my loafs nice and light and fluffy with a nice crispy crust. I also switch back and forth from honey to molasses every other time I make this bread to keep things interesting.

  3. I have been searching for a recipe for years that would be my go-to sandwich bread. I make this twice a week and it is the perfect texture for sandwiches, and is just delicious as a dinner bread as well. It's moist and light, yet sturdy. The only change I make is using all honey instead of molasses. I use the sandwich setting with a light crust on my bread maker.

  4. I made as directed (except I used Smart balance spread instead of butter or margarine) and it turned out great. I love homemade bread and wheat bread. I like the poster's idea of putting in a bag right after coming out of the machine. Sometimes the bread turns too hard. Thanks! I'll make this again.
