Shining Star Marquee
Add a little glitz and glamour to your movie night shindig.
A movie night wouldn’t be complete without its very own star marquee — here's how it's done!
Material for the marquee light
Prep time: 2 hours
Total time: 3 hours
• 1 20” x 30” white foam board
• Star template
• Pencil
• Utility Knife
• Yard stick
• 1 string of 20 clear globe lights
• 1 20” x 30” poster board
• Scissors
• Bone folder or scoring tool
• Hot glue
• Gold spray paint
• Gold glitter spray paint
1 TRACE THE STAR
Draw a star onto your white foam board. The easiest way to do this is to download the provided triangle template, cut around it, place it on the board and trace. Then move it around the board, connecting the template to the traced triangles until you have drawn a star.
2 CUT OUT THE STAR
Cut the star out with a utility knife, using a yardstick or ruler to help stay on the straight lines and employing several lighter strokes until you break all the way through the board.
3 DRAW THE LINES
Use a yard stick to connect each tip of the star to the opposite inverted point and lightly draw lines, this will help you find the exact center of the star.
4 MARK THE SPOTS
Decide how far apart you’d like each light to be (we did 2.5 inches) and mark these spots along each line, going out from the center point.
5 TRACE THE BULBS
Remove the bulbs from your light strand and use the light bulb base to trace a circle over each mark.
6 CUT OUT THE CIRCLES
Use a utility knife to cut out each circle, making sure to cut inside of each tracing so that it is slightly smaller than the light bulb base.
7 CUT OUT THE STRIPS
Divide a poster board into 4-inch strips and cut them out.
To make sure we glue these strips evenly around the star, mark a line at 1.5 inches on each strip. Measure the length of each point of the star (if you used our template, this should be 7 3/8 inches). Now use a bone folder or scoring tool to create fold lines on your first strip every 7 3/8 inches (or the length of your star's points).
8 GLUE THE STRIP
Use a hot glue gun to attach the strip along the 1.5 inch line to the edge of the star, matching the folds you’ve made to points and inverts.
9 SPRAY PAINT THE STAR
Spray paint the star in multiple light coats with gold spray paint, allowing 15 minutes between each coat to dry. Once you have a nice gold covering, spray multiple coats of glitter spray, allowing time for drying between.
10 INSERT THE BULBS
Insert light bulbs from the front and screw them into their bases in the back, hiding the wire behind the star.
11 LIGHT IT UP
Set out on a table or to hang, attach a string from the light strand on the back and enjoy your masterpiece!
