The Peanut Butter Power Rankings

Here at, you might say that we're extremely passionate about food. Obsessed, even. So when we decided to taste, debate and rank peanut butter brands, we threw down completely. As the roasty, toasty scent of peanuts wafted through the halls of headquarters, we giggled and sampled our way through ten varieties of the smooth, sticky stuff. Also, before we begin, let's get one thing straight: peanuts are in fact not nuts at all, but rather legumes (seeds enclosed in pods). #themoreyouknow
Below, you'll find our critical thoughts, concerns and the perplexing peanut discoveries of our blind taste test.

The Criteria
Taste: How peanut-y is it? How pleasing is the overall flavor?
Consistency: How smooth is it? Too soupy? Too stiff?
Complexity: How versatile is the flavor? How many applications could we use this in?

#10: Justin's

Overall score: 3.1 / 10

The favorite of hipsters everywhere just didn't impress.

#9: MaraNatha

Overall score: 4.1 / 10

Most of us had never heard of this brand before, despite its apparent popularity. Turns out, there was a reason for that: It tasted vaguely of sesame, which really threw us off. "It doesn't even taste like peanut butter", one team member said.

#8: Whole Foods 365

Overall score: 4.2 / 10

#7: Teddie

Overall score: 4.9 / 10

This one had good flavor, although it was a little on the savory side for our liking.

#6: Trader Joe's

Overall score: 5 / 10

The cult favorite gained points for a smooth texture, but lost when it came to taste. Don't hate us.

#5: Peter Pan

Overall score: 5.1 / 10

We adored the flavor of this childhood classic, but its sweetness contributed to a low complexity score. We couldn't imagine using this for much else but a PB&J.

#4: Skippy

Overall score: 6.2 / 10

Even without seeing its blindingly bright packaging, we knew this was one of our faves. Lots of extra points for a perfectly smooth texture.

#3: Jif

Overall score: 6.7 / 10

Gotta hand it to the choosy moms out there, Jif peanut butter was ranked high in every category. It's classic flavor is still the one we'd prefer on our PB&Js if we're being honest.

#2: Smucker's Natural

Overall score: 7.1 / 10

Smucker's Natural got pretty high marks in every category, but took the lead when it came to complexity. It has a deep, roasted flavor that we felt was versatile enough to go from a classic PB&J to a savory peanut sauce.

WINNER: Peanut Butter & Co.

Overall score: 8.1 / 10

We quickly found out that we all agreed Smooth Operator from Peanut Butter & Co. was our favorite. It struck the perfect balance between salty and sweet and had a texture our team could only describe as "perfectly light and fluffy."
