McDonald’s is the grand corporate explorer; venturing off to various parts of the world and conquering them. Now, the restaurant chain is bringing home the spoils.
A new McDonald’s restaurant opened its doors on April 25th in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood, only instead of limiting itself to the standard menu of burgers-and-fries, it will also be selling a selection of favorites from McDonald’s restaurants around the world.
McDonald’s restaurants have slightly differentiated menus depending on the country they are found in. This “glocalization”—attempts by a global business to create place-specific appeal—might help the restaurants fit in better, but it also makes us darn jealous that we can’t have the same McVegan burger that the Scandinavians do.
The new McDonald’s HQ restaurant in Chicago finally gives us the chance to have a taste. What’s first on the regularly-rotating menu? Two sandwiches, including the Mighty Angus Burger from Canada, with onion cheese, bacon and steak sauce, and the McSpicy Chicken Sandwich from Hong Kong, which is made with a marinated and breaded spicy fried chicken sandwich.

The Cheese & Bacon Loaded Fries are a side from Down Under (specifically, Australia). And France is coming in hot with two different salad favorites—the Manhattan Salad, made with mixed lettuces, grape tomatoes, dried cranberries and apples with chicken, and the Mozza Salad, made with pasta, mozzarella, roasted tomatoes, arugula and balsamic dressing.

Finally, dessert comes from Brazil in the form of the McFlurry Prestígio, which is a whipped up ice cream shake made with strawberry sauce and chocolate, covered in coconut.

The Chicago restaurant is an example of McDonald’s new interior design concept, which highlights the global nature of the brand with digital maps, mobile ordering and table service.
The rotating menu will also be accompanied by McDonald’s classics.
Let’s be real, though. We all just want to try the McVegan.
