Michelin Guide Releases Its NYC Picks

Confirms claims that the Big Apple has lost its status as the best food city in America.

With its annual guides that have been in circulation since 1904, Michelin can make or break the world’s biggest and most influential restaurants. And, as the food world has been speculating leading up to the Guide’s publication on Monday, it can also upend a city’s claim to being a top food destination. At least in theory.

With the demotion of Jean-Georges from three stars (“Exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey”) to two stars (“Excellent cooking, worth a detour”), the number of three-star restaurants in New York drops from six to five. When compared with the San Francisco Bay Area’s seven in the same category, some are saying that NYC is no longer top dog.

Still, with five restaurants in the three-star category, 11 in the two-star category and 55 in the one-star category (and all 124 of those Bib Gourmands, awarded for “exceptionally good food at moderate prices”), New York still has plenty of spots where you can get your chew on.
