Chipotle Upgrades Its Queso & Teases New Nachos

Ooey gooey and better than ever?

When OG fast casual Mexican chain Chipotle launched its queso nationwide in September, it was handed a lukewarm reception from critics and the general public. Now, following the abdication of the Chipotl-throne by founder Steve Ells, the company seems to be making a play for rebirth. Step one? Fix the queso.

They said it was too gritty and grainy. They said it wasn’t hot enough. Bien entendu, said Chipotle. As Business Insider discovered last week, the company’s Manhattan test kitchen has been playing with the recipe, and they’ve come up with a new-and-improved winning formula.

"Same commitment to ingredients (still all real ingredients with nothing artificial),” a spokesperson said in an email to the website, “but it's got a creamier texture and a really nice flavor."

They noted that the queso’s flavor profile has an improved level of heat and a less grainy texture.

But Chipotle is not stopping there. No, they’re taking their new and improved cheese sauce and slathering it on their perfectly thin, impeccably salted, hint-of-lime chips. Nachos are now available at the test kitchen starting at just under $5, and can be customized with the restaurant’s other burrito ingredients, like salsa and beans.

Hold on to your chair; depending on their success in the test kitchen, they just might be coming soon to a Chipotle near you.
