Chipotle Breaks with Burritos & Introduces New Menu Items

Did somebody say… milkshakes?

It may not spell the end for lead-weight burritos, but customers itching for some Chipotle may soon notice new items up on the Mexican joint’s famously spartan menu board.

On Friday, the Mexican fast casual chain unveiled five new menu items at its New York City test kitchen; items it hopes will excite its customer base and reinvigorate sales.

The new options include a milkshake made with Mexican chocolate, as well as nachos, quesadillas, avocado tostadas and a salad with a citrus-and-avocado dressing.

Test kitchen chef Chad Bauze described them as “snacky” at a preview last week, according to Bloomberg. The company hopes that less gargantuan menu options will appeal to customers who may be looking for something to nibble on before meals, and who aren’t looking to have their appetites satisfied for a full week after eating a five-pound burrito.

The menu additions come four months after Chipotle founder Steve Ells was replaced as CEO by ex-CEO of Taco Bell Brian Niccol. Where Chipotle once stuck to a solid shortlist menu of burritos, quesadillas and heavy salads, the brand’s do-one-thing-and-do-it-well card was really no longer playable after a series of E. coli and norovirus outbreaks shook consumer trust in its dishes.

Will the new additions join Chipotle’s queso as nationwide menu items? New Yorkers will have to vote with their dollars before we’ll know for sure.
