Vermont-based ice cream makers Ben & Jerry’s have always been a jam band sort-of organization. The company launched its rockstar Cherry Garcia flavor in 1987, named after the legendary singer and guitarist of the Grateful Dead. Then in 1997, it partnered with Phish to create Phish Food.

Now, Ben & Jerry’s is teaming up with Phish again to release a rich, sort-of-brand-new flavor called “It’s Ice… Cream,” named after the 1991 Phish song, “It’s Ice.” The ice cream will be accompanied by gift items, the proceeds of which will go to the band’s charitable organization, the WaterWheel Foundation.

But first and foremost, the flavors. “It’s Ice… Cream” starts with a caramel malt ice cream base that’s jam-band-packed with toffee and fudge fish, and swirled with caramel.

The container was designed by Phish poster-maker Jim Pollock, who also created a full-size version ($50) available at the Ben & Jerry’s web store, along with a tricked-out gift pack. The gift pack ($248) includes a pint of the new Phish ice cream, a limited-edition poster, an ice cream patch, a Ben & Jerry’s spoon and a USB stick containing the audio from the 1997 concert at which the announcement for Phish Food was made.

"For over twenty years, Phish has enjoyed a great partnership with Ben & Jerry's and we're excited that this new creative flavor can continue to support the work of The WaterWheel Foundation," said Phish drummer Jon Fishman in a statement.

The WaterWheel Foundation champions a wide variety of causes from environmental conservation to arts education. The foundation also collects donations and sells merchandise at Phish concerts; the net amount of money raised is donated to local charities in the city where the band is playing.

So grab a spoon and a pint of ice… cream, then jam the heck out, man.
