Americans Will Eat Enough Super Bowl Wings to Circle Earth 3x
Pass the Buffalo sauce… a lot of it.
When the Super Bowl rolls around on February 4th, there are a few things you just have to have on the table. The first thing is a Slider Stadium. Yes, that exists. And the second thing is a big ol’ batch of chicken wings. No matter which team you’re rooting for, you’ve gotta have those wings.
Wings are so ingrained in the ritual of the sport that Americans are projected to eat as many as 1.35 billion of them on the day of the big game. That’s billion with a “B.”
That monster figure comes from the National Chicken Council’s annual Chicken Wing Report, so it likely needs to be taken with a grain of salt, as does any research funded by industry advocates. But any way you cook it, Americans love their chicken even more each year. This year’s prediction is up by 20 million wings over last year’s estimates of 1.33 billion.
To illustrate the enormity of this figure, the NCC created an infographic with some quirky figures. For instance, 1.35 billion chicken wings would wrap around the world three times if set from end to end. With that many wings, each attendee at each of the NFL’s 32 stadiums would be able to eat 625 wings.
Some other figures? For starters, that massive number of wings had to come from 337.5 million chickens. Then, the weight of 1.35 billion average-sized chicken wing segments (four per chicken: two “drumettes and two “flats”) is just under 111,720 tons. That’s twice the weight of the Titanic.
So whether you’re on team Buffalo or team honey BBQ, enjoy those wings. But maybe don’t eat 625 of them.
