A New Kind of Onion Aims to Dry Your Tears

Has chopping onions got you a little teary-eyed? Well, wipe your eyes and prepare to never deal with the pesky kitchen-prep waterworks again.

According to Asda, a British-based supermarket, farmers have created a new breed of onion that not only doesn’t cause tears but promises to leave your breath fresh and fume free.

The “Sweet Red” onion, which has a milder taste due to its lower amounts of sulfur (the irritant that causes your tears) took more than 20 years to perfect before arriving at the final product.

Farmer Alistair Findlay in Bedfordshire, England tasted 400-500 onion bulbs each season to perfect the mild and crunchy vegetable, which is now available in Asda stores in the UK. That’s one stinky sacrifice.

While there’s no news yet of when the new variety of onion will make its way out of the UK, you can always try out some of these tasty onion recipes the old-fashioned way—tears and all.
