Ye Olde Gingerbread

  1. In a large bowl, combine egg, sugar, sortening, molasses, salt, baking soda and ginger.
  2. When thoroughly blended, add hot water; stir, then add flour. Pour into 9x9-inch baking dish. Bake at 350F for 45 minutes, or unti la toothpick inserted in the center comes our clean.
  3. Cool and sprinkle with icing sugar.
  4. LEMON SAUCE: Cream butter and sugar together; blend in brandy if using. Beat in egg and lemon rind.
  5. Transfer mixrture to top of double boiler. Gradually add boiling water to mixture, stirring constantly.
  6. Heat 7-8 minutes. Stir in lemon juice and spices. Serve hot, makes 2 cups.
