Sweet and Sour Sauce

This is a traditional sauce for serving along some Shanghai dishes.

  1. Heat oil in a small pot on medium heat. Add the green onion and garlic and stir-fry for 1-2 minutes.
  2. Combine 1/4 cup water, salt, sugar, soy sauce, and vinegar. Add to the pot and bring to a rolling boil. Lower heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
  3. Combine cornstarch and 3 tbsp water in a glass until well mixed. Slowly add to pot, stirring constantly. Simmer, stirring constantly, until thick.
