Split Pea and Barley Soup

Ingredients
- 2 1⁄2 cups dried split peas
- 1⁄2 cup pearl barley
- 8 cups water
- 1 onion, diced
- 2 tablespoons garlic, minced
- olive oil
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 2 teaspoons cracked black pepper
- 1⁄2 teaspoon cayenne
- 1 teaspoon paprika
Directions
- In large pot heat olive oil.
- Sauté onion and garlic until brown.
- Add water, peas, barley, salt, pepper, cayenne, and paprika.
- Bring to boil.
- Reduce heat, cover and cook on low (simmer) for 1 ½ hours, stirring occasionally.
- Serve hot.
