Soda Bread

Traditional Irish soda bread. This bread is perfect with soups, toasted or fried for breakfast.

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Pour flour, baking soda and salt in a mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly. Add buttermilk at once and mix with a wooden spoon until dry ingredients have been moistened. The dough should be slightly lumpy, do not over mix.
  3. Split the dough into two equal parts and gently knead each one to form two round mounds of dough. Put cooking paper on a baking tray and put the two mounds of dough on the tray. Using a sharp knife, cut 1/2 inch deep perpendicular slits on the top of each mound to form crosses.
  4. Put the baking tray in the preheated oven and bake for 40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown. When the bread is ready, it should make a hollow sound when its bottom is tapped with the tip of a finger.
  5. Let the bread cool on a cooling rack for a few minutes before serving.
