Savory Steak and Pepper Stir Fry

Ingredients

  • 2  teaspoons  oil
  • 1 12 lbs  flank steaks, thinly sliced (or use pork tenderloin)
  • 18 teaspoon five-spice powder
  • 1  medium  red pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1  medium green pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1  small onion, thinly sliced
  • 2  tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1  tablespoon soy sauce, or
  • 1  tablespoon  teriyaki sauce (for sweeter flavor)
  • 1  tablespoon cornstarch
  •  cooked rice, for serving

Directions

  1. In a skillet, heat oil on medium-high until hot. Sprinkle steak with five-spice powder and 1/4 tsp salt; add to skillet. Cook 3 minutes or until just browned, stirring occasionally. With a slotted spoon, transfer to a bowl.
  2. If you're not fond of peppers, you can substitute a bag of frozen broccoli florets. To skillet, add peppers (florets), onion, 2 tbsp water, and a pinch of salt. Cover; cook 5 minutes, or until slightly softened, stirring occasionally.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together sugar, soy sauce, cornstarch, 3 tbsp water and 1/4 tsp pepper until smooth. Add to skillet; heat to simmering. Simmer 1 minute or until thickened. Add beef and any accumulated juices to skillet. Cook 1 minute or until beef is heated through. Serve over rice.
