Old Fashioned Bread Pudding

I recently found an old handwritten cookbook of my late grandmother's. This is one of the recipes I've made from it. I had not really ever tried bread pudding but I really liked it. I've made it as the recipe states and also with a sweet bread I had on hand. I like it best served warm but it is good cold as well. Show more

Serves: 8

Yields: 1 casserole

Ingredients

  •  butter
  • 6  slices  stale bread
  • 3  eggs, slightly beaten
  • 12 cup sugar
  • 14 teaspoon salt
  • 1  quart milk

Directions

  1. Generously spread each slice of bread with butter. Place buttered side down in greased casserole dish.
  2. Combine the eggs, sugar, salt and milk. Strain liquid while pouring over bread in dish.
  3. Let stand for 30 minutes.
  4. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour. Cover during first half hour of baking.
  5. Serve warm or cold.
