Ingredients
- 2 cups whole milk
- 2 cups water
- 2 cups old fashioned oats
- 1⁄4 cup brown sugar or 1⁄4 cup maple syrup
- 1⁄2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1⁄2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1⁄4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 pinch salt
- fresh fruit (optional) or dried fruit, chocolate chips (optional) or nuts, for serving (optional)
Directions
- Combine all ingredients in a 3- to 4-quart heavy pot.
- Bring to a boil over high heat, stirring occasionally. Then reduce the heat to maintain a simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until the oatmeal is creamy and a little thinner than you like it (about ten minutes, give or take).
- Cool for a few minutes and serve topped with fresh or dried fruit, chocolate chips, or nuts.
