Molasses Substitute

I didn't have molasses for a bread recipe and this worked great. My recipe called for milk so I didn't add the hot water in this recipe. It was easy because I just added the sugar and cream of tartar at the point the recipe called for molasses. I rarely have molasses, and now I wonder why I would ever need to buy that sticky stuff that is so difficult to get out of the jar anyway. Serving size is estimated. Show more

Directions

  1. Combine sugar and cream of tartar with hot water. If you are making a recipe that calls for a liquid, omit the hot water and just add the sugar and molasses.
  2. If there are other spices in the recipe, increase them just a bit to compensate for the loss of molasses flavor.
