Merry Cherry Squares

These are an old childhood favorite of mine. I had these each holiday, I think my aunt made them. They look festive too. Show more

Serves: 40

Ingredients

  • 1  cup sugar
  • 1  cup  softened butter
  • 12 teaspoon  almond extract
  • 1  egg
  • 2  cups flour
  • 34 cup  coarsely chopped  candied red cherries
  • 14 teaspoon salt
  • 13 cup  coarsely chopped green  candy covered plain chocolate candies
  • GLAZE

  • 1  cup powdered sugar
  • 5 -6  teaspoons warm water

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 300.
  2. Mix sugar, butter, almond extreact and egg in a large bowl until well blended.
  3. Stir in flour, 1/2 cup cherries, and salt.
  4. Spread in ungreased 15 1/2 x 10 jelly roll pan.
  5. Sprinkle on top the remaining cherries and the candies; press lightly.
  6. Bake until edges are very light brown, 30 to 35 minutes.
  7. Cool completely.
  8. Make glaze by mixing powdered sugar and water until smooth and of desired consistency.
  9. Drizzle squares with glaze.
